Iani fuit cognomen, sic dicti: Vel quod genere Graecus ex Perrhaebia fuerit, ac profectus in Italiam, sedibus apud Barbaros positis, linguam vitaeque rationem ibi mutaverit; vel quod Italos fetis utentes incultisque moribus, suadendo ad aliud vitae genus traduxerit, atque Agriculturâ civilique institutione instruxerit. Alii, quia prudentissimus erat, videbatque procul futura et respiciebat praeterita, quod Homer. Il. γ. v. 109. vocat πρόςςω καὶ ὀπίςςω λἐυςςειν, sic appellatum volunt. Ovidius. ut et Augustmus ex Varrone, Ianum mundum este geminâ facie, hâc Ortum spectante, illâ Occasum contendunt. C. Bassus apud Macrob. Saturn. l. 1 6. 9. dicit, Bifrontem Ianum, quasi superum ac inferum ianitorem, fingi. Sed quis veitis Bifrons Ianus Noachô est, qui et veterem mundum diluviô occidentem, et novum benignitate Dei orientem vidit, utriusque insuper incolas salutaribus monitis imbuit, ipse prudentiâ supra omnes mortales insignis. Fuit et Quadrifrons Ianus: utriufque in nummis veterib. simulacrum exhibet Ioh. Rosin. Antiqq. Rom. l. 2. c. 3.
